How many times have you had an awesome business idea and a name for it… only to find that the perfect .COM domain name is already taken? Depending on your desired name, finding a good .COM or .NET can be challenging, especially if it’s short or if you have basic dictionary words within it. Those days may soon be over.
Domain name searches are getting a whole lot easier—and much more creative—with the new “gTLDs” – short for Generic Top Level Domains. ICANN, the organization that governs the domain name industry, has begun a slow rollout of hundreds of new “right of the dot” domain extensions. The new extensions are based on ordinary dictionary and colloquial words, many of which are based on professional descriptions, such as .florist or .agency. Some varieties are nouns or adjectives, such as .tips, .club or .guru. Roughly 70 new extensions are already available.
As the new extensions are being released to the public gradually – you may have to keep a close eye out for the ones you are most interested in. Many of the major domain name registrars, such as GoDaddy, Moniker, Namecheap and others, have handy search and watchlist features on their sites, so you can be notified about pre-order or general availability of the extension of your choice.
Some popular gTLD extensions available now:
